Meet Rachel Barr, MFT

Licensed Psychotherapist and Couples Counselor

Welcome—I’m Rachel Barr, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over two decades of experience supporting individuals and couples in creating meaningful, lasting change. My practice integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS), Attachment-Focused EMDR, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy—proven, effective approaches that deepen self-awareness, strengthen communication, and support emotional healing. I specialize in individual psychotherapy and couples counseling, and I offer a warm, collaborative environment where each client’s story is honored.

For 15 years, I maintained a thriving private practice in Los Angeles, working with a diverse range of individuals and couples. During the pandemic, I relocated to Northern California, a transition that marked both a professional and personal shift. While I retain a deep appreciation for my years in Los Angeles, I have come to value the natural beauty and sense of balance that Northern California offers—often reflecting on how fortunate I am to call it home. This perspective continues to inform my clinical work and commitment to thoughtful, grounded care.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University, with a concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy, and I am licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. I am a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), a professional organization committed to advancing the practice and standards of mental health care across the state. I currently serve as Director of Marketing for the Marin County chapter of CAMFT, where I help promote community, education and support for mental health professionals.

Engaging with my community is a deep passion. I regularly offer lectures and seminars at local campuses and advocate for the well-being of women and families.

Therapy You Can Trust To Help You Reach Your Goals

Engaging in therapy is a meaningful investment in yourself—one that requires openness, courage, and a willingness to grow. As an actively practicing clinician, I bring both professional expertise and personal insight into the therapeutic process. My own experience in therapy has deepened my understanding of what it means to do this work, reinforcing the importance of empathy, clarity, and self-compassion. This perspective allows me to meet clients with genuine presence and purpose.

In session, I draw from a blend of evidence-based approaches tailored to your specific needs. Our work may involve building insight into emotional patterns and core beliefs, developing practical tools for emotional regulation, and increasing awareness of the internal parts that shape your identity. Whether you're addressing trauma, navigating relationship challenges, or working through life transitions, I support you in creating sustainable change and cultivating a deeper sense of resilience and self-understanding.

My presence in the room is active and engaged. I don’t take a passive role—I listen carefully, ask purposeful questions, and offer targeted reflections and interventions to help move the work forward. I aim to create a space that is both supportive and challenging, where your goals remain central and our collaboration leads to meaningful, lasting growth.

Why I Love My Work

What I love most about this work—whether supporting individuals or couples—is how dynamic and alive it is. Each session brings a unique story, relationship system, and emotional landscape. I’m continually learning and evolving in my practice, always seeking ways to create meaningful, lasting impact.

Intuition plays a central role in how I work. I pay close attention to both what’s said and what’s felt, tracking shifts in energy, unspoken needs, and relational patterns. In couples work especially, I focus on joining the system—understanding how each partner’s experience shapes the dynamic between them. My aim is to create a space where clients feel seen, supported, and challenged in service of long-term growth and transformation.

I care deeply about how the work resonates for my clients. We regularly check in to ensure the process aligns with your goals and values. My practice is LGBTQIA+ affirmative and grounded in an anti-racist, social justice-informed lens. Services are currently offered both online and in person, with offices in San Rafael and Los Angeles, California.
