About Rachel
I have been working as a therapist with teens, families, adults, and couples for the past seven years. Previous to my work as a therapist, I was a high school history and algebra teacher with at-risk youth. During my time as a teacher, I enjoyed building individual relationships with my students and developed the desire to work therapeutically with this age group.
I graduated from Antioch University in Los Angeles with a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology, and a concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy. I received a Bachelor's Degree in History from California State University, Northridge, graduating with honors. My concentration and thesis was focused on Post WWII Youth Culture in America. I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist by the state of California, and a member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
For the past four years I have been working as a School-Based Therapist for Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services, one of the largest community-based mental health organizations in California. I provide individual and family therapy for teenagers in the public school system who are struggling with issues like depression, low motivation, truancy, poor school performance, body image, cutting and other self-mutilating behaviors, anxiety, stress, family conflict, relationship issues, peer pressure, and drug use.
In 2007, I developed a social-skill building group as an adjunct to the Bridge Program, in order to facilitate a smooth transition between middle school and high school. The program is designed to increase awareness of the choices teens have, and the choices they make. Six schools are currently participating in the program. Those who have participated in the groups have proven to be more successful in managing their high school years.
